Brokeback wins critics' award

Los Angeles - Brokeback Mountain, the controversial gay cowboy movie by Hong Kong director Ang Lee, has picked up three prizes at the influential Critics' Choice Awards, boosting its claim for Oscar glory.
The movie, starring Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal, was named best picture. Lee picked up the best director award and Michelle Williams, who plays the suffering wife of Ledger's character, tied for best supporting actress with Amy Adams of Junebug.
Philip Seymour Hoffman took the best acting prize for his role as writer Truman Capote in the movie In Cold Blood, while Reese Witherspoon took the best actress prize for her portrayal of country music legend June Carter Cash in Walk the Line.
The awards on Monday night came a week before the Golden Globe Awards, regarded as the second-biggest prizes in Hollywood after the Oscars.
Brokeback Mountain is nominated for a leading seven Golden Globes after being named best picture by the New York and Los Angeles film critics organisations.
Academy Award nominations will be announced on January 31 and the Oscars will be presented on March 5. - Sapa-dpa
