Los Angeles - Star-struck movie fans and style gurus will this year be treated to an extended edition of the world's greatest fashion show, the annual Oscars red carpet parade, organisers said on Tuesday.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is boosting the duration of the telecast of the red carpet parade at the 78th annual Academy Awards to a full hour from 30 minutes to give viewers a better sense of what's hot and what's not.
"People want to see the glitz and glamour - they want to see fashions on the red carpet!" said Academy president Sid Ganis, explaining why the seven-year-old red-carpet format was being rejigged.
Up to one billion television viewers across the globe are expected to tune in to watch cinema's greatest honours being handed out, and the traditional red carpet show is for many the highlight of the evening.
"An hour also will give us time to acquaint our viewers with some of the films and nominees they may not know so well. There will be terrific little stories to tell here, and we'll use this extra time to tell them," Ganis said.
The golden statuettes will be handed out at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre on March 5.
The Oscars is an annual orgy of fashion, that prompts a jostle among clothes and jewellery designers to get the stars to sport their designs before the phalanx of cameras that line the red carpet.
The world's top movie stars traditionally alight from convoys of limousines, wearing glamorous outfits bedecked with millions of dollars worth of jewellery.
The red carpet has become so important for fashion that by the day after the show, knock off editions of the frocks sported by famous actresses can be bought by adoring fans in major US cities.
Nominations for this year's Oscars will be unveiled in Beverly Hills before dawn on January 31.
