Los Angeles - Australian heart-throb Heath Ledger will play The Joker in the next Batman movie.
He will play the villain opposite Christian Bale, Warner Bros announced on Tuesday.
Ledger, 27, who played a gay cowboy in the Oscar-nominated drama Brokeback Mountain, will inherit a role made famous by Jack Nicholson in the first Batman film in 1989.
The sixth instalment of the franchise, The Dark Knight, will star Bale for the second time as Batman. He first played the role in Batman Begins.
The millionaire hero Bruce Wayne was previously played by actors Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney.
