Scrabble goes pink

London - The famous board game Scrabble is to change colour for the first time in its history, to raise money for research into breast cancer, its makers Mattel announced on Wednesday.

Letter tiles, racks, boards and boxes will be tinged pink, with £1.50 from each £15 sale going to the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity from mid-September.

Scrabble, invented in 1948, involves creating words from individual letter tiles chosen at random by players. Each letter is worth a number of points, depending on their frequency in the English language.

The aim is to create high-scoring words on the board.

Versions of Scrabble have been released in a number of languages, including Welsh in 2005 where separate letter tiles had to be created for specific Welsh letters such as "ch", "dd" and "ff".
