  • New Delhi - Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan has signed on to do his first new film since an illness put him out of action for several months last year.

Bachchan, affectionately known as "Big B" throughout India, will star in director Shoojit Sircar's new film Johnny Walker, a love story.

Bachchan told The Times of India in an interview published on Saturday that he chose the movie for his return because "as an actor, I feel the film has the potential to cut across global audiences".

Sircar said he wrote the script, telling the story of a man and wife who rediscover their love later in life, with Bachchan in mind for the lead role.

Bachchan, 63, underwent surgery for an intestinal ailment in November.

He did not work for four months and then only to complete work he had already committed to.

Fans organised prayer services for him at Hindu temples from Calcutta to Kerala when he fell ill in November, and good wishes were included in prayers in many Indian schools.

Hundreds kept vigil outside the hospital where he was treated.

"For all those who think Mr Bachchan is unwell, I would like to say that he is more agile than any other actor around and working full throttle," said Sircar.

Bachchan, who has a massive cult following in India, has acted in more than 150 Bollywood movies in a career spanning three decades.
