Venice - British actress Helen Mirren won the best actress award at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth II in Stephen Frears' The Queen, the jury announced.
Ben Affleck won the best actor award for his portrayal of cinema's first Superman, George Reeves, in Hollywoodland.
In a message to the festival from his home in Los Angeles, Affleck said he was "surprised, flattered and honoured" to receive the award for his role as the tragic Reeves, who died in mysterious circumstances in 1959.
China's Still Life, about the lives of ordinary people set against the backdrop of the giant Three Gorges Dam project, won the film festival's top
award.
The film by Jia Zhang-Ke was a surprise late entry into the
main competition and trumped hot favourites including The Queen and Emilio Estevez's Bobby.
