Moscow - Pop star Madonna's Russian concert was pushed back a day to avoid performing on the fifth anniversary of the September 11 attacks on the United States, a Russian organiser said on Monday.

Organisers announced late last month the concert would go ahead on September 12 instead of the September 11 date they had originally planned.

"We decided that to hold the concert on that day would have been unethical," Vladimir Kiselyov, General Director of concert co-organiser FGUP Kreml, told NTV television.

The concert will be Madonna's first in Russia. Organisers moved it to a football stadium after police warned the original venue was too small to handle the thousands of fans expected to turn out.

The pop star flew in to Moscow's Vnukovo airport on Monday and checked into a hotel behind the Bolshoi Theatre and a short walk from Red Square and the Kremlin.

About 100 fans were camped on the street outside. They caught a brief glimpse of Madonna as she left the hotel to go to an evening engagement.
