London - British rockers the Arctic
Monkeys are on the shortlist for a prestigious Ivor Novello
award for When the Sun Goes Down, while Amy Winehouse and
Madonna are in the running in other categories.
The Sheffield-based Arctic Monkeys, who released their
second album on Monday, have been nominated for best song,
musically and lyrically, alongside Nerina Pallot (for Sophia)
and Scott Matthews (for Elusive).
Arctic Monkeys have already picked up the Mercury Prize for
best British album in September and best British group and album
prizes at the Brits in February.
In the best contemporary song category, soul singer
Winehouse (Rehab) is up against Hot Chip's Over and Over and
Bodyrox Ft Luciana's Yeah Yeah.
The International Hit of the Year award is being contested
by US glamrockers Scissor Sisters (I Don't Feel Like
Dancin'), British favourite Robbie Williams (Rudebox) and
US superstar Madonna (Sorry).
Madonna and Scissor Sisters are also short listed for the
same songs in the Most Performed Work category along with Put
Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae.
Awards to take place in London
Although the annual Ivor Novello awards honour British
songwriters and composers, British writers were involved both in
the Madonna and Scissor Sisters hits.
The Ivor Novello Awards take their name from the Welsh
actor, composer and playwright who was one of Britain's biggest
stage and screen stars in the early part of the last century.
The 52nd Ivor Novello awards will take place in London on
May 24.
