China bans sex talk radio shows
17/09/2007 11:59  - (SA)

  • Ang Lee censors erotic new film
  • Comedian's speech censored
  • Singapore bans gay exhibition
  • Beijing - Chinese regulators have ordered 11 radio shows off the air for talking too explicitly about sex.

The order on Friday by China's broadcast agency added to a series of recent moves to ban radio or television programs deemed too vulgar or sexually oriented.

The latest shows targeted broadcast material of an "extreme pornographic nature" about sex lives, the effectiveness of sex-related drugs and other topics, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television said.

Radio talk shows about romance, sex and other personal matters are hugely popular in China, but producers sometimes run afoul of conservative communist regulators.

    Sex and drugs

The shows in the latest ban were broadcast by five stations in southern and central China, SARFT said on its website.

It said those responsible would be "dealt with" but gave no indication whether they might face criminal charges.

Authorities have already banned two radio programs for talking explicitly about sex and drugs.

Earlier, regulators banned television shows about cosmetic surgery and sex changes and a talent show deemed coarse.
