  • Kirk boldy going nowhere
  • Shatner to the rescue
  • Los Angeles - William Shatner, best known for playing Captain Kirk in Star Trek, has spoken of his surprise at not being offered a cameo role in the latest movie version of the cult science-fiction show.

But the 76-year-old Canadian actor - who skippered the USS Enterprise during the 79 episodes that aired between 1966 and 1969 and in the seven films that followed - says he expects the new Star Trek blockbuster to be a hit.

"How could you not put one of the founding figures into a movie that was being resurrected?," Shatner told US entertainment television program Extra.

"That doesn't make good business sense to me!" he said in the interview to be screened later on Wednesday.

Several past cast members offered roles

Leonard Nimoy and several other past cast members are reported to have been offered roles in the film, which is being directed by JJ Abrams, one of the creators of cult television show Lost.

Shatner told Extra that while he would have added to the film's appeal, he believes it will be successful without him.

"I've become even more popular than I was playing Captain Kirk," he said.

"I'm good box office and I get publicity. But, they are going in a different direction and it'll be a wonderful film."
