  • London - Sci-fi spectacular I am Legend became Britain's first box office chart topper of 2008, according to Screen International.

    Starring Will Smith, the story of a US army officer in Manhattan who may just be the last man on Earth took £6.6m on its debut weekend.

    The Golden Compass, an adaptation of the Philip Pullman book starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig, was unchanged in second place, just above the previous chart-topper, Disney's send-up of its trademark fairy tales, Enchanted.

    Down one at four was girls' school romp St Trinian's, while at five, also down one place, was family movie Alvin and the Chipmunks.

    At six, down from five, was the animated Bee Movie with Jerry Seinfeld as the voice of Barry B. Benson, a college bee who does not want to become a worker.

    New at seven was ping pong comedy movie Balls of Fury, while up two places at eight P.S. I Love You starring Hilary Swank as a smart Manhattanite who gets mail from her husband - beyond the grave.

    New at nine was the critically acclaimed adaptation of Khaled Hosseini's Afghan novel The Kite Runner, while down two places at 10 was the magical toy shop of i>Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium.
