  • Hollywood - Violent thriller No Country for Old Men was crowned best picture at the Oscars here on Sunday, completing a virtual clean sweep of awards season honours.

    Joel and Ethan Coen's film about the bloody aftermath of a botched drug deal pipped oil industry epic There Will Be Blood, World War II drama Atonement, legal thriller Michael Clayton and comedy Juno to take the prize.

    It was the first Coen brothers film to win the best picture Oscar.

    Europeans have swept the top acting prizes at the Academy Awards.

    British actor Daniel Day-Lewis has won the best actor prize for his role as oil prospector Daniel Plainview in There Will Be Blood.

    French actress Marion Cotillard is a surprise winner in the best actress category La Vie En Rose for her portrayal of singer Edith Piaf.

    Supporting actor and actress awards were won by Spain's Javier Bardem for No Country for Old Men and British actress Tilda Swinton for Michael Clayton.

    "Dude, Hollywood is built on Europeans," Swinton said backstage after her win. "Don't tell everybody, but we're everywhere." (Additional reporting AP)
