Los Angeles - US music star Janet Jackson on Monday apologised after Justin Timberlake exposed one of her breasts in front of nearly 100 million television viewers, CNN reported.

Jackson's mea culpa came amid snowballing public and official outrage in the United States after Timberlake ripped off her bodice at the end of their half-time performance at Sunday's football Super Bowl, baring her breast.

"The decision to have a costume reveal at the end of my half-time show performance was made after final rehearsals," Jackson said in a statement broadcast by CNN. "MTV was completely unaware of it.

"It was not my intention that it go as far as it did. I apologise to anyone offended, including the audience, MTV, CBS, and the NFL (National Football League)."

Timberlake and the show producers, MTV and CBS, apologised earlier and insisted it was an innocent "wardrobe malfunction" that caused Jackson's over-exposure during the country's most watched television event.
