London - Britain's Prince William, second in line for the throne, on Saturday received a Master's degree in geography from St Andrews University in Scotland, achieving higher academic honours than his father Prince Charles.
William, 23, found out about his 2:1 honours, the second-highest level, by logging onto a secure internet website, said a spokesperson from Clarence House, which handles media relations for Charles and his family.
"He is delighted. Everyone is absolutely delighted. His father is very proud," the spokesperson said.
Charles, the son of Queen Elizabeth II and heir to the throne, received a lower second class honours degree in history from Cambridge University.
William appears to be the most intellectual of the British royals.
He obtained three A-levels - exams given at the end of secondary school in Britain - while both his younger brother Prince Harry and his father took two.
During his four years at the Scottish university, the press agreed to show restraint so he could lead a somewhat normal student life.
That came after the death of his mother Princess Diana who was killed in a car crash in Paris in 1997.
Now that he has his degree, William will assume for the first time his official duties and put himself in the spotlight.
He is preparing to go to New Zealand where he will represent the British monarch at ceremonies celebrating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II.
William's future plans include joining his brother at Britain's Sandhurst military academy.
