Los Angeles - The sister of slain US president John F Kennedy and the mother-in-law of California's superstar Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has suffered a minor stroke, hospital officials said on Monday.
The 84-year-old Eunice Kennedy Shriver, the wife of Peace Corps founder Sargent Shriver and mother of California first lady Maria Shriver, was admitted to the University of California Medical Centre on Saturday.
"Eunice Kennedy Shriver was hospitalised at UCLA Medical Centre on Saturday following a minor stroke," a statement said.
"She is also being treated for a recent stress fracture of the left hip. Doctors are anticipating a short hospital stay," the statement added.
Shriver, one of the daughters of Kennedy political dynasty founder Joseph Kennedy, was in California to attend a conference of women and families hosted by her daughter and famous son-in-law last week, the first lady said.
Eunice Kennedy Shriver, a mother-of-five, is one of the founders of the Special Olympics, an athletic competition for the disabled.
Her husband, Sargent Shriver, held a variety of positions in the administrations of John F Kennedy and his successor Lyndon B Johnson and was the Democratic Party's 1972 vice presidential nominee.
