London - Britain's Prince William, who is due to embark on a career in the army, has taken his girlfriend Kate Middleton on a "romantic ski trip" in the Swiss Alps, the Sun newspaper reported on Tuesday.
The 23-year-old prince will not see Kate for five weeks after next Sunday when he starts an officer training course at Sandhurst military academy near London.
The paper said it also meant that William would miss Kate's 24th birthday next Monday.
The pair, who both graduated from St Andrews university in Scotland last summer, have been together for four years.
The Sun said they jetted to the Swiss Alps on New Year's Day for a final few days together before he begins his gruelling 44-week training.
A friend of the couple, who met four years ago at university, told The Sun: "William and Kate are trying to spend as much time together as possible before he starts at Sandhurst."
"They've dreaded this for months. They know how their lives are about to change. At uni they saw each other every day but that will soon seem a very long time ago. The ski trip was one way William has tried to soften the blow," the Sun quoted the friend as saying.
