The apple of Carrey's eye

  • London - Comic actor Jim Carrey revealed he is learning how to love life again thanks to his teenage daughter, in a British newspaper interview published on Friday.

The twice-divorced Canadian funnyman, who has admitted taken drugs for depression, said he had overcome his loneliness by spending time with 18-year-old Jane.

Carrey, who turns 44 on Tuesday, said his daughter from his first marriage was putting the smile back on his face.

"I look forward to the time I spend with her. Nothing really compares to that. That's my current focus," he told The Sun newspaper.

"Everything else is secondary. It wasn't like that the whole time. My priorities were different earlier on.

"But life has a way of showing you. First you have to experience sheer loneliness. You can go through a period feeling kind of vacant. Then you realise, 'Oh, that's what other people are here for'.

"I enjoy people more than ever. I enjoy the moment more than ever. I value my family and my friends more than ever."

    Carrey's take on love

Carrey, who starred in 1994's Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask and Bruce Almighty in 2003, is currently starring in the bank heist comedy remake Fun With Dick and Jane alongside Tea Leoni.

Carrey's engagement to US actress Renee Zellwegger ended five years ago. Now his daughter is the only woman dominating his life.

"I date. I am very happy - but that doesn't have to do with anybody else," he said.

"I wish that when you are going through hard times with women, you could have the presence of mind to say, 'This is going to pay off some day, I'm going to be able to use this in a really funny comedy'.

"You wish you could remember that when you have been gutted by a girl and you have had your heart ripped out and you are laying splayed out on the rocks. But it never occurs to you at the time."
