Tokyo - Princess Kiko, the wife of the Japanese emperor's second son Akishino, is pregnant, reports said on Tuesday, potentially influencing the debate on historic moves to end male-only succession.
The Imperial Household Agency confirmed the pregnancy of Princess Kiko, 39, who has two daughters, Kyodo News and public broadcaster NHK said. An agency spokesperson had no immediate comment.
No boy has been born to the imperial family since 1965. Crown Prince Naruhito and Crown Princess Masako have one child, four-year-old Princess Aiko.
The government has proposed ending male succession in the world's oldest monarchy to allow Aiko to ascend the Chrysanthemum Throne.
