London - British pop star Robbie Williams has been admitted to a rehab centre in the United States for a dependency on prescription drugs, his spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

"Robbie Williams has today been admitted into a treatment centre in America for his dependency on prescription drugs," the spokesperson Bryony Watts said. "There will be no further comment on this matter."

The news came as the former Take That star turned 33 on Tuesday.

Formed in Manchester in 1990, the band dominated the pop charts in the first half of the decade with its dance tunes and soulful ballads, before Williams struck out on his own, a year before the group's demise.
