London - Britain's Prince William and his girlfriend Kate Middleton were reported on Sunday to be enjoying a "holiday in paradise" on the Seychelles, and to be about to get engaged.

Plans for an engagement were being discussed "in the highest circles" according to the Mail on Sunday, while the Sun had already said the prince was highly likely to pop the question during a week-long holiday on Ile Desroches, south of the Seychelles capital Mahe.

The British popular press, usually well-informed about such matters, has long speculated about the couple - both 25 - getting married following their recent highly-public flirting during the Wembley pop concert for William's late mother Princess Diana.

The Mail on Sunday quoted an insider as saying an engagement was "closer than you'd think".

Kate already had her own pass for unhindered access to Clarence House, the London residence of William's family including Prince Charles and his new wife Camilla.

William is second in line to the British throne after his father, Charles. - Sapa-dpa
