Wellington - Football superstar David Beckham has been the target of an obsessed stalker while in New Zealand with his LA Galaxy side, according to a report on Sunday.
The footballer's personal bodyguards were alerted when the man tried to buy their security passes, saying he was "destined" to meet Beckham, the Sunday News said.
Gibson Security, the outfit hired to protect Beckham during his four-day stay in New Zealand, told the newspaper they were treating the man as a potential risk to the LA Galaxy and England midfielder's safety.
"We have identified the individual you are talking about and we are keeping an eye on him," Gibson Security spokesperson Daniel Wynyard said.
He said guards were given a description of the man and told to keep him away from Beckham at all times.
Beckham-mania erupted in New Zealand when he arrived in Wellington with the LA Galaxy and he delivered for his fans on Saturday, when he scored from a penalty in a 4-1 win over the Wellington Phoenix.
The match attracted 31 853 spectators, a record for a football match in rugby-obsessed New Zealand.
