23/12/2007 10:01 - (SA)
London - Troubled singer Amy Winehouse is on course to have the year's biggest-selling album, despite a late challenge from former "X Factor" winner Leona Lewis, a UK industry body said on Friday.
Winehouse, 24, who was arrested and bailed this week as part of an investigation into perverting the course of justice, has sold 1.65 million copies of Back To Black.
The album contains hits such as Rehab, You Know I'm No
Good and Tears Dry On Their Own.
"She has been the biggest new star of British music for much
of this year," said a spokesperson for the BPI, formerly the
British Phonographic Industry, which compiled the figures with
the Official UK Charts Company.
Winehouse, nominated for six Grammy awards, has struggled
with drugs and alcohol since shooting to fame.
Her husband Blake Fielder-Civil is being held on remand
accused of grievous bodily harm and conspiracy to pervert the
course of justice.
