Cape Town - Australian actor Heath Ledger's death was "accidental", the celebrity website TMZ has reported.
According to the website a representative of the Ledger family said they were told by police there was no evidence to support reports that he may have committed suicide.
"They are particularly distraught over media reports that he may have taken his own life. The family says he was not that kind of person," TMZ reported.
TMZ has also reported rumours that the actor was sick with pneumonia when he died.
In the meantime, Heath Ledger's father, Kim Ledger, has released a statement on Australian television:
"We, Heath's family, confirm, the very tragic, untimely and accidental passing of our dearly loved son, brother and doting father of Matilda.
" He was found peacefully asleep in his New York apartment by his housekeeper at 15:30 US time.
"We would like to thank our friends and everyone around the world for their well wishes and kind thoughts at this time.
"Heath has touched so many people on so many different levels during his short life but few had the pleasure of truly knowing him.
"He was a down to earth, generous, kind-hearted, life-loving and selfless individual who was extremely inspirational to many.
"Please now respect our families need to grieve and come to terms with our loss privately.
Michelle Williams, Heath Ledger's former fiancé and mother of his 2-year-old daughter, Matilda Rose, is reportedly "devastated" by his death.
The actress, who met Ledger on the set of Brokeback Mountain, heard the news in Sweden, where she is filming a new movie.
"Words can not describe her pain," TMZ reports.
Williams is travelling with their daughter to New York to be with the family.
