Amy's win sends 'bad' message
12/02/2008 09:26  - (SA)

  • Rehab Amy still a star

  • Los Angeles - Soul singer Natalie Cole spoke out against Amy Winehouse's haul of Grammy awards on Monday, saying the British star's multiple wins sent a "bad message," a report said.

Cole, a multiple Grammy winner who helped announce Winehouse's record of the year victory at Sunday's ceremony in Los Angeles, criticised the award in an interview on People magazine's website.

"I don't think she should have won," Cole said of Winehouse, who is currently receiving treatment at a rehabilitation clinic for drug abuse.

"I think it sends a bad message to our young people who are trying to get into this business, the ones who are trying to do it right and really trying to keep themselves together," added Cole, 58.

"We have to stop rewarding bad behavior."

Cole, the daughter of legendary crooner, Nat King Cole, chronicled her own battle against drug addiction in a 2000 memoir Angel on My Shoulder.

'She needs to get herself together'

However, the singer was adamant that Winehouse should not have been honoured with the music industry's top awards.

"I'm sorry. I think the girl is talented, gifted, but it's not right for her to be able to have her cake and eat it too.

"She needs to get herself together ... this is about discipline and hard work, and you don't get to just do your drugs and go onstage and get rewarded."

Cole had no complaints with Winehouse's Grammys performance, which was beamed to Los Angeles via satellite from London.

"Her performance was fine," Cole said.

"I don't take anything away from her talent, but I just feel like she's stepping into a place that she hasn't earned yet."

    And the award goes to...

Winehouse was the star of Sunday's show, scooping five awards - including the coveted record of the year, song of the year and best new artist.

Cole however said she would have preferred to see R'n'B stars Beyonce or Rihanna rewarded instead of Winehouse.

"I just feel like they're ready to go the long haul. You can tell how hard they work, they're great people, their heart is in the right place.

"These are the people we should be praising, these are the people we should be encouraging."

      Not very fair is it?
    12/02/2008 10:37
I think Ms Cole is being judgemental. The Grammys are an award for talent, not your personal problems. Yes she is a role model for young people but who are we to judge and say she can't an award because of it? So if Denzel is driving under the influence he cant get an Oscar? bollocks! Maybe its because Amy is white. Yes I dared to pull the race card - Beyonce and Rihanna are both talented, but Amy just happened to deserve this award too, and maybe its what she needs to pull herself together. - Tanya

      So...
    12/02/2008 10:48
Ms Cole thinks Amy should not have won, even though she has the talent?? Drugs or no drugs, this is a typical comment from a has-been. - manicm

      Amy shouldn't have won?
    12/02/2008 11:12
Natalie Cole is obviously so out of tune with music. Amy Winehouse's behaviour wasn't rewarded it was her talent. Cole should go back to black and have some coke! - Andre le Roux

      who cares
    12/02/2008 11:13
whether amys doing naughty things or not does not detract from the fact she has the talent,so she should be rewarded.People watching etc should be strong enough to manage their own lifes, the entertainment business is not for kids.Stop the jealousy Natalie - lee

      She shouldn't have won!
    12/02/2008 12:11
Firstly the music is rubbish, secondly what makes being in the entertainment industry any different from having a normal job, if you had to go to work under the influence of drugs it wouldnt be long before you were fired, I think Natalie is correct in saying the example being set is bad how many kids are influenced by celebrities and by being rewarded despite continuous battles with drug addiction doesnt help a young prson make right decisions at all. Clint - What!?

      AMY DESERVES TO WIN
    12/02/2008 12:19
cause she is a white trash deserving the life she is in.Go Amy snort coke and kill yourself who cares? there will be less crack pots. - real

      Why compare?
    12/02/2008 12:25
Rihanna and Beyonce are RnB/Pop singers, while Amy is more soul! so they are on different levels, with Rihanna and Beyonce aiming to entertain than to be like Ms.Winehouse, who really lives the music. Even in her performances, she's never extravagant like the two other ladies, so please just let her be! You rock Amy! - Buhle

      SHE SHOULD NOT HAVE WON
    12/02/2008 12:33
I agree with Natalie. We are always telling the younger generation to accomplish anything in life you have to work hard and you will be rewarded. when they see this they think well look at this how hard is it to do something wrong and get praised for it. Thats celebrity life for you. - JILL YOUNG

      It is about the music
    12/02/2008 12:38
This just again confirms the fact that most people in the music industry has forgotten the most important thing. The music. Ms Winehouse was by far the most impressive artist to be nominated this year. This lady has talent, so much more talent than Rihanna or Beyonce. At least she has come up with an original sound and good music, and that is what is being rewarded. I am actually listening to it now. - noyb

      Tell it like it is
    12/02/2008 12:49
When people tell the truth they are always criticised. Yeah it encourages bad behaviour. She was not supposed to win anyway who is winehouse? - George

      OH HELL NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    12/02/2008 12:49
NO, NO, NO. Let us recall the bad performance on last years MTV awards where she had to sing. And then she wins awards for such disastruos singing. I am no expert but i know errible singing when i hear one. I felt such piy for the back-up dancers havig to tolerate, but then at the same time, she is a good artist that needs to play role of rcovering and educating rather than being encouraged to continue. We as the youth will visualise this as ITS OK TO TAKE CRACK. YOU DO SUCCEED. - sizile

Miss Cole definitely has a point
    12/02/2008 12:55
My, my can some people take things personal. Amy is not doing anything temporarily like being drunk one evening. She is permanently on a high and constantly humiliating herself wherever she appears.Even right at her front door!.Public figures are looked at as a whole. Many people never heard Amy sing but they see her face in every newspaper and TV station. A real sad sight to see indeed. If we all praise that then children tend to think it's cool to be like that and THAT IS VERY VERY SAD. - LPV

      Amy's win sends 'bad' message
    12/02/2008 13:21
They tried to make me go to rehab but I said 'no, no, no.' Yes I've been black but when I come back you'll know know know. I ain't got the time and if my daddy thinks I'm fine. He's tried to make me go to rehab but I won't go go go. Legends must learn to live with it. Judges' decision is final. - Eisleben

      Amy shouldn't have won
    12/02/2008 13:30
who is she(Natalie) to speak like that about Amy?? Amy's talent was rewarded, not her drug problem which is trying to kick-off. we expect too much from our singers, they are just ordinary people with their own mistakes.Amy has a brighter future ahead,no matter who says what!!! we should be supporting her not judging.AMY FOR MUSIC PRESIDENT - TSIETSI

      White trash
    12/02/2008 13:33
why do people like Any Winehouse so much ?.Amy's music is not good ,she looks like white trash/Freak ,she is a drug abuser ,she is setting a bad example ,Amy Winehouse is a jumped up druggie who deserves to go to jail or die of an overdose - Music fan

      "IF"....
    12/02/2008 13:37
and that is a big "IF", the Grammy's were about awarding talent, Amy shouldn't have won anyway. But, let's be clear, the Grammys's have nothing to do with talent. - Dan

      Amy
    12/02/2008 14:27
I think the judges are also on crack. - marty

      Amy winner
    12/02/2008 14:30
well we have to agree, that Cole is a racist. If Amy wasn't a Caucasian, she would have had Cole's support. She is just acid, because she couldn't win squat while she was drugged out of her skull!!! - sowat
