Bloemfontein - A traffic officer astounded motorists on Tuesday when, in the middle of a serious traffic jam, she decided to get singer Steve Hofmeyr's autograph.
Lucia Malelekoa deserted her post to get Hofmeyr's autograph at a traffic light in Nelson Mandela Drive.
"Steve! Steeeve! Steeeeeve!" was all that 34-year-old Malelekoa could exclaim when she recognised the popular singer in the middle of the traffic jam. Some motorists gaped at her, while others hooted.
Malelekoa had to control the traffic in the busy street on Tuesday about 11:00.
A car accident in which a 73-year-old woman had been seriously injured held up traffic in front of College Square for a long time.
Now, it's a special uniform
Molelekoa was sent out to solve the problem. She was controlling the traffic in the middle of the crossing between Mimosa and College Square when Hofmeyr stopped near her in his luxurious, black Chrysler.
"I recognised Steve by his goatee. I like him kwaai and I saw him on Sewende Laan!" said Malelekoa.
"When I saw him at the traffic light, I decided that this was my chance. I ran to his window.
"He smiled and asked, 'How are you?' I asked him for his autograph, but I didn't have a pen or paper on me.
"Steve took out a felt-tip pen and wrote his name on my uniform. I'm going to wear this uniform every day and am never going to wash it again!" she laughed.
Steve is in Bloemfontein for two performances.
