  • Johannesburg - US talk show queen Oprah Winfrey has become the latest celebrity to be roped in by former president Nelson Mandela to build a school for the disadvantaged.

The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls South Africa, to be built at Henley-on-Klip, south of Johannesburg, will be funded by The Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Nelson Mandela Foundation.

Mandela has made several appearances on The Oprah Winfrey Show, and is known for his ability to exact contributions from celebrities and business people to fund educational projects.

Mandela, Winfrey, Education Minister Kader Asmal and Gauteng Education MEC Ignatius Jacobs will attend a sod-turning ceremony for the school on Friday, Asmal's office said.

Winfrey's publicist Lisa Halliday said Winfrey is determined to make a difference to the lives of South African children - hence the school, which will cater for girls between Grades 7 and 12.
