Johannesburg - "It will be good to be back on air after about nine months."
These were the words of veteran broadcaster Alex Jay on Tuesday after the radio station 94.7 Highveld Stereo announced that Jay would stand in for Jeremy Mansfield during the morning slot while Mansfield was on leave.
Jay said: "I think it will be a jol. A permanent position isn't available at this stage and that's why I will be working on a freelance basis from next week."
He aims to work at Highveld Stereo at least once a month every year, but isn't contemplating a move to Johannesburg at this stage.
"From a professional point of view a move back to Johannesburg would make sense, but because of my family, the emphasis is on Cape Town."
Listeners were up in arms last year when 41-year-old Jay was axed by SABC's 5fm. The station said at the time that Jay didn't fit their young image anymore even though he had made a huge impression.
He said he finds the direction 5fm is pursuing at the moment, which is quite youthful, a bit strange.
"The fact that they took me, as well as Darren (Scott) off air because we are on the wrong side of 30 or 40 is...."
Jay, who in earlier interviews declined to discuss the parting of ways with 5fm, said he was sad about the turn of events.
"My loyalty is not with them (5fm), but to radio, but that's all in the past", he said.
