Pierce says sorry

2003-08-15 07:00

Cape Town - Cape Talk's morning presenter Nigel Pierce, under fire for his attack on Afrikaans rugby players, backpedalled under pressure again on Thursday when he had to apologise on the air to an ANC MP for insulting him.

A week ago Pierce remarked there were too many "stupid Dutchmen" in the Springbok rugby team and they should go. "Seriously."

He later excluded captain Corne Krige.

In another outburst on Wednesday which lasted a few minutes he lashed out at ANC member of the parliamentary portfolio committee for sport and recreation, calling him a "baboon, dummy" and "arse".

On Thursday Pierce offered a brief apology for his choice of words while "emotional".

Apparently pressure continues to mount on the radio station to demand an apology of Pierce and/or his resignation. A number of listeners have already lodged complaints with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission.

The NNP, the first party to demand an apology, is still busy formulating complaints to watchdog institutions.

Station manager Colleen Louw and Pierce have avoided repeated enquiries since the presenter launched into his vindictive tirade last Friday.
