Cape Town - Veteran broadcaster Alex Jay will be taking over Bob Mabena's drive-time afternoon slot on 94.7 Highveld Stereo from January 2004, it has been confirmed.
According to Highveld Stereo's public relations manager Natasha Wadvalla, Jay has signed a three-year contract for the position.
Mabena who hosted the afternoon drive-time slot for over two years, has resigned from the station to pursue other interests.
Mabena first joined 94.7 in 1997 as presenter of the mid-morning slot, as well as programme manager. He subsequently joined Kaya FM. In January 2001, Mabena re-joined 94.7 as the afternoon anchor.
In a statement, Mabena said: "I am sad to leave this great radio station. However, my move is for personal growth. All I can say at this stage is that I am going to remain in the radio industry and I will be in a position to divulge more in about two weeks' time.
"I will miss all my colleagues and friends at 94.7. I have thoroughly enjoyed my stay at the station. It has been exciting and fulfilling. I have learnt a lot."
Jay has been working for the Gauteng based radio station on a freelance basis since July - mostly filling in for existing hosts.
Fans were up in arms last year when 5fm gave Jay the boot. The station said at the time that Jay didn't fit their young image.
