Johannesburg - Brenda Fassie's agent has lashed out at the media after conflicting reports about the singer's condition.
"I have never seen such poor reporting in my life," Peter Snyman said.
"I was driving through the streets of Hillbrow this morning (Sunday) and saw posters saying that Brenda was brain dead. She is not. She is in a critical but stable condition."
Snyman said certain radio stations even announced on Sunday morning that Fassie was dead. "The condolences are streaming in. How should her family feel?" Snyman said.
Fassie, South Africa's best selling recording artist, collapsed at her home in Buccleuch, Sandton, a week ago.
A spokesperson for EMI initially said that she had an asthma attack, but at a news conference over the weekend, it came to light that the singer had a heart attack.
Fassie has a long history of drug abuse. She was admitted to the Elim clinic in Kempton Park in 2002 for, among other things, an addiction to heroin.
Leslie Sedibe, legal and business affairs director at EMI Music, said Fassie's vital signs were stable.
"Neurological tests have shown that parts of her brain were damaged because of an oxygen shortage. The extent of the damage is not yet known and further tests will have to be conducted," he said.
Close friends and family members have been at the bedside of Mabrrr - as the singer is popularly known - since Monday.
