Fassie fights lung infection

Johannesburg - Musician Brenda Fassie, in a coma in a Johannesburg hospital, had contracted a lung infection overnight, her record company EMI said on Monday.
"After an examination this morning by her doctors, it was established that Brenda had picked up a lung infection overnight," said Leslie Sedibe, a lawyer for EMI Records.
Fassie was admitted to Sandton's Sunninghill Hospital last week following an asthma attack which lead to cardio-respiratory arrest.
The new infection was being treated and doctors did not consider it life threatening, Sedibe said.
Sedibe confirmed Fassie had also suffered damage to her brain, but said this was "not to the same as saying somebody is brain dead".
Doctors were able to successfully resuscitate Fassie when she was admitted following the asthma attack, but she then fell into a coma, Sedibe said on Sunday.
He said a neurosurgeon from the Sunninghill Hospital confirmed that Fassie's neurological condition remained the same.
"She remains in a coma and her condition is considered critical but stable."
Sedibe said the Fassie family wished to thank Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, her daughter Zinzi, Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang, former boxing champion Baby Jakes Matlala, musician Mariam Makeba and Reserve Bank Governor Tito Mboweni for their support.
