  • Johannesburg - South African pop diva Brenda Fassie's hospitalisation has generated so much public interest that a SMS service giving updates and allowing support messages to be sent went into operation on Wednesday.

Fassie remained in a stable condition, but in a coma, in a Johannesburg hospital, her recording company EMI said on Wednesday.

Spokesperson Leslie Sedibe said Fassie remained "neurologically unchanged", and her blood pressure was normal.

Fassie was hospitalised on Monday last week following an asthma attack which led to cardio-respiratory arrest. Doctors were able to resuscitate her but she fell into a coma.

Sedibe said those wanting to send their support to Fassie should send an SMS by typing "Brenda", making one space and writing a message of about 160 words. The message should be sent to the number 36836.

"Each SMS will cost R5 and the proceeds will be paid to a newly-established Fassie Trust Fund."

Sedibe said people who wanted periodical updates on Fassie's condition, needed to SMS "latest" and send to 36836.

"A message will be sent back immediately on her progress," he said.
