Film star Will Smith is to host the next 46664 HIV/Aids awareness concert, to be held in George on March 19.

Former president Nelson Mandela launched the concert on Thursday, announcing a star studded South African line-up, to be complemented by top international acts.

The concert, to be held at the Fancourt Golf Estate, would feature four international acts and 12 local acts including Mandoza, Khabelo, Prime Circle, Karen Zoid, Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen joined by Bad Company's Roger Taylor, Annie Lennox and India.Arie.

All artists will be performing free and costs will be covered by the owners of Fancourt

"We must mobilise to act, and act soon before it is too late," said Mandela

Mandela, whose son Makgatho recently died of Aids, said that not enough had been done by the public since the last concert in Cape Town in 2003.

Global response

Although there had a been a response from around the world, the onus was on South Africans to take responsibility for their own future, he said.

Veteran concert promoter Roddy Quinn said: "We wondered whether we could do this on a golf course but when we got there we realised it was an ideal venue."

Ninety five percent of the equipment and 90 percent of the crew would be sourced locally.

Tickets would be limited to 20 000 people at R250 each and the local communities would be drawn in.

NGOs and the Department of Health would be provided with an opportunity to flight HIV/Aids messages.

People wanting to donate to the fund can sms their name to the number 46664 and R20 will be forwarded to the fund.
