Johannesburg - Ladysmith Black Mambazo has returned to South Africa after a resounding four-month tour of the United States.
The popular group held its last performance on Saturday at the Sanders Theatre in Cambridge.
The a capella troupe scooped a Grammy Award earlier this year for its album Raise Your Spirits Higher which was voted the best traditional world music album.
In a career spanning 30 years, the group has been nominated for nine Grammys. Its previous Grammy win came in 1987 for the album Shaka Zulu.
South African sales of its recent album, No Boundaries, which was recorded with the prestigious English Chamber Orchestra, have also started on a brisk note, after the album only became available in South Africa three weeks ago.
To honour Mambazo, the Musicians and Artists Assistance Programme of South Africa and Drakensberg Promotions have organised a tribute concert which will be held in Durban and Johannesburg respectively.
On Saturday, the Durban City Hall will reverberate to the sound of the seven bass voices and three tenors singing such close harmonies and with such subtle nuancing that they sound like one deep, rich, resonant and proud voice. Sharing the stage with Mambazo will be popular band Stimela and Johnny Clegg and Juluka.
On May 7, at the Carnival City Casino in Brakpan, Mambazo will share the stage with internationally acclaimed trumpeter Hugh Masekela, Stimela, Richy Ramolefe and the best-selling group in the country, Malaika.
