Johannesburg - With a canary-yellow evening dress and scenes of a diverse South Africa on a blue satin coat, Miss South Africa Claudia Henkel, plans to bring the Miss Universe title back home.
Henkel gave the media a sneak preview of her outfits at Sun International's head office in Sandton on Thursday before leaving to take part in the competition.
The pageant takes place in Bangkok on May 31.
This year, the organisers gave local designers the opportunity to tender for designing her evening wear and traditional costume - like their international counterparts do.
Marc and Michael, a designer team from Johannesburg, won the honour of dressing Henkel for the gala evening. Her evening dress is made of bright yellow satin and chiffon and decorated with Swarovski crystals.
'Dangerously sexy, yet elegant'
Michael Pokroy, one of the designers, said they design dresses for women who want to be noticed. "Claudia has the perfect body to wear a dress that looks dangerously sexy yet, elegant."
The GFD Design Emporium from Johannesburg designed the traditional costume with its ostrich feathers and animal skin.
The skirt and top are initially hidden under a blue satin coat, but when she opens it, several local scenes such as Cape fishermen at the harbour, Table Mountain and even the mines of Johannesburg, are displayed inside.
Henkel will also be taking along her national gifts, a shawl and handbag made of ostrich feathers as well as an African watch. These gifts will be auctioned off in Thailand for charity shortly before the competition.
