Johannesburg - Organisers of the Live 8 concert that will be held in Johannesburg on Saturday hope that about 50 000 people will attend the free show.

It is one of eight free concerts aimed at drawing billions of listeners and viewers to convey a single message: "Help to eradicate worldwide poverty and debt."

The concerts will take place in Philadelphia in America, London, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Tokyo, Barrie in Canada and Johannesburg on the same day.

The Africa Standing Tall Against Poverty Concert will be held at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, Johannesburg.

It is the only concert of the eight that will take place in a developing country.

Several organisations such as the Global Call to Action against Poverty (GCAP) and Live 8 are organising the concerts.

The organisations scheduled the Live 8 campaign to take place shortly before the G8 summit in Scotland.

Hassen Lorgat, spokesperson for GCAP, said they hoped that through the concerts they would encourage G8 leaders to write off the debt of poor countries and to adopt a new trading policy that will benefit poorer countries.

Some of the artists that will be performing at the Johannesburg concert are Oumou Sangare, Lucky Dube, Zola, Mahotella Queens and Bayete.

Further Africa concerts will take place later this year in Kenya and Ghana.

Admission to the concerts will be free and the various concerts will be broadcast in several other countries.

The Africa Standing Tall Against Poverty Concert will start at 12:00 and end at 19:30.
