Porn lands e.tv in trouble
15/11/2005 14:59 - (SA)
Cape Town - Television channel e.tv will be subpoenaed to appear before parliament's home affairs portfolio committee after failing to attend a hearing on pornography on Tuesday.
"We are not sure they are taking our work seriously. They are the most serious culprits when it comes to pornography," committee chairperson Patrick Chauke said.
The television channel and the newspaper, The Daily Voice, failed to appear before the committee seeking input on the "scourge of pornography in the country".
This was the second time e.tv had failed to appear before the committee.
The channel's representative had instead gone to the United Kingdom, which Chauke supposed was "to buy more pornography intended to pump right into our nation".
African Christian Democratic Party MP Steve Swart called for the subpoenaing of both e.tv and The Voice - a motion backed by the rest of the committee.
"They are not taking their social responsibility to South Africa seriously," said the Democratic Alliance's Sandy Kalyan.
Chauke said the two organisations would be dealt with accordingly.
