Johannesburg - There's a dark, deep and sinister twist in the offing for Egoli - and, it has nothing to do with Koeberg!

Fans of the popular M-Net soapy should not miss Monday's episode - there are two surprises waiting on them.

The first is a new character, one who will upset many people; who's going to turn things in Egoli dramatically upside down.

That's natural, but the producers of Egoli are absolutely mum regarding this mysterious new card in the Egoli pack.

Gizela Arndt of the media office of producer Franz Marx refuses to drop a single hint about the new character.

She even refuses to divulge the character's gender.

"We are not going to give away too much on the history of this character and the story lines in which he or she will become involved," was all Beeld could get out of her.

    Tension about soapy's future

The second surprise will be sub-titles in English starting from Monday.

According to Arndt, their research showed that many English-speaking people would love to watch Egoli, but the language barrier was daunting as 60% of the soapy was in Afrikaans.

"We decided to make the change that our research has identified in the market and comply with the need for sub-titles.

Meanwhile, no final decision has been made on whether or not Egoli will disappear from the box next year when M-Net's open-viewing time is due to end.

Those in the know are keeping mum, but people in the inside track say tension on the Egoli set is running high as the cast do not know how long they will have jobs.

M-Net said earlier that a final decision was due to be made next month.

    - Beeld
