Johannesburg - Corine du Toit, one of the lead actresses in the popular MNet soapie, Egoli, was seriously injured when she tumbled off the back of a bakkie at the weekend.
She has serious facial injuries and is in the intensive-care unit of an Alberton hospital, where she has already had two emergency operations.
Corine has been playing the role of Jane Edwards in Egoli since September 2004.
Her character has had viewers up in arms over the past few weeks with her moves to undermine workers at Walco car company, which belongs to her father, Chris Edwards (Eckard Rabe).
Egoli producers immediately started re-writing and rescheduling the script and filming after hearing about Corine's accident.
As she plays a lead role and is on set almost daily, all the scripts will have to be rewritten in a hurry.
Bakkie hit a bump
Rasmus Jansen, the owner of a farm near Villiers in the Free State where Corine often relaxed at weekends, said the "unfortunate incident" took place shortly before 15:00 on Saturday after Corine and other guests had gone for a spin in the bakkie.
"Corine sat at the back. At one stage, the bakkie hit a bump in the dirt road. She lost her balance and fell off. Her face hit one of the iron bars on the side of the bakkie with quite an impact."
Her nose was broken, and she had several other serious facial injuries. The impact was so severe she even had a hair fracture in the bone around her left eye, he said.
"After hitting her face, she fell to the ground and broke her left wrist. She also injured her arm and leg.
"We immediately called for an ambulance, which took her to Union Hospital in Alberton, where she underwent an emergency operation. She actually had two operations that lasted four hours in total.
Praying she will recover
"Her eyesight has not been impaired, and she doesn't have double-vision. She is still in the intensive care unit," Jansen said on Sunday afternoon.
Burgert Muller, one of the Egoli producers said the rescheduling for the soapie was the "least of our concerns".
"We are much more worried about Corine's welfare. She is a wonderful actress and we just pray she will recover soon," he said.
