Johannesburg - Corine du Toit, one of the main actors in the MNet soap Egoli, who was seriously injured after falling from the back of a bakkie, was still "heavily drugged and suffering terrible pain" in Union Hospital in Alberton on Monday.
She has, however, given the first step towards recovery after being moved from ICU to a normal ward following two emergency operations on Saturday night.
The bad news was that more surgery might be necessary.
Du Toit, who plays the role of superbitch Jane Edwards in Egoli, was relaxing with friends on a farm near Villiers in the Free State on Saturday afternoon.
As the group went on a joyride, Du Toit, who was on the back of the bakkie, lost her balance and fell off when the car went over a bump in the road.
Her face hit an iron bar on the side of the bakkie and she suffered several fractures and other injuries around her nose. She also broke her left wrist.
"She is still in no state to receive visitors. She is suffering a lot and is still being drugged."
"I'm not 100% sure whether more surgery would be necessary, but it seems so. These will be secondary operations and not reconstructive surgery," said Rasmus Jensen, a family friend, who was also acting as Du Toit's spokesperson.
He was with Du Toit when the accident took place. He pointed out, however, that he was not the owner of the farm.
"The irony is that the bakkie was not even moving fast when she fell off," he said.
Burgert Muller, co-producer of Egoli, said the production team was ready to handle the unexpected twist in the role of one of the lead players.
"Initially we will simply reschedule Corine's days on the set, but if it seems that she will be absent for quite a while, we will ask the scriptwriters to change the storyline and temporarily write her out of the story."
