'Racist' remark on TV show

Johannesburg - Several viewers of SABC 2's popular reality dance show, Strictly Come Dancing, were shocked by seemingly racist comments from a competitor and a presenter on Saturday.

Babalwa Mneno, model, social butterfly and leader of the Sundowns soccer team's cheerleaders, said: "That should be a lesson to black people to vote only for each other."

The comment was made shortly after she and dance partner Thabo Moloto had been voted out.

The show's presenter Sandy Ngema said in response: "Yes, yes, absolutely!"

Heidi Pretorius, a spokesperson for the programme, said she was not aware of the comments.

"Because it is a live broadcast, things like that sometimes slip through. If Babalwa said it, it was her opinion and not that of the programme."

Meanwhile viewers saw singer Tamara Dey seriously injure her kneecap during the live broadcast on Saturday.

Dey had to leave the floor in pain shortly after she and dance partner, Brendon Eilers, had started their Ramba performance.

She injured her knee during one of the intricate steps. They couldn't finish the dance, but the judges praised their short performance.

Pretorius said the singer is recovering well and is hoping to continue with the programme this week.

  'Racist' remark on TV show
14/08/2006 09:12
I was rather shocked with their response to being booted off the show. This was most definitely generalisation. I recall far too clearly how Sandy showed her reaction, on the previous series when Zwai Bala was booted off she clearly showed her disgust and disapproval as a presenter she should remain impartial. - Peters

Babalwa's comment certainly spoiled a wonderful evening. The irony of the story is that the couple that most likely received the most votes was Freedom and his partner. Whether one is black or white, it's not difficult to vote for them ahead of anyone else on that dance floor. - Jo

The longer we pretend that what was said is not on our minds, the longer it will take for us to reach the same level of equality, where we oh so obviously lag behind.... - Joman & over.....

  Pity
14/08/2006 09:37
How unfortunate is it that remarks like that could still be made, especially on a show that has a diversity of cultures enjoying the same form of entertainment. I am white and have voted for Freedom and his partner throughout. I might have changed my mind seeing that colour votes for colour...? - Rogers

  vote on the ability

Only a sore looser would make such a comment. If I were in the competition, I certainly would want people to vote on my dancing ability and not my skin colour. Grow up little girls. - colour blind

It's clear that she did not deserve to leave. Mark Fish and Fox can't dance! Why they are still there is beyond comprehension! The judges themselves are unfair! - stef

  Racist sad remark
14/08/2006 10:10
I am black and the group I wanted out anyway was Babalwa and her partner because to me on the day she was the weakest link. The comment I did not hear live, if it is true it's a great disappointment. - Bo

  Shame

Who cares. Sticks and stones love, sticks and stones may break my bones but words can do me none... - Jo
