Cape Town - 5FM DJ Gareth Cliff has done it again. And no, he is not going to apologise.
"Afrikaners are so touchy, they always look for reasons to fight with people," Cliff said in reaction to a complaint from a dissatisfied listener that he apparently made degrading and insulting comments about Afrikaans-speaking people.
Heléne Lötter said Cliff's remarks were not suitable for young people, who comprise the greater percentage of the station's listeners.
Cliff apparently said: "What do you think of Afrikaans families who combine the mom's and dad's names to create a name for the child? Isn't that arrogant? It's like playing with yourself. For example, the dad's name is Johan and the mother's is Marie, and then the poor child is christened Jo-Marie."
Lötter wants Cliff to prove that only Afrikaners use this method of naming.
Lötter lodged the complaint with the Broadcasting Complaints Commission of South Africa and thinks this commentary, which was broadcast on Tuesday on Cliff's morning broadcast, The Best of the Gareth Cliff Show, is unacceptable.
"He dismissed us as second-class people. There's nothing wrong with humour, but sometimes things can go too far.
"People tend to say Afrikaners are stupid, arrogant or racist. We need fewer negative people like Gareth. He must apologise to all Afrikaans speakers," she said.
Meanwhile Cliff has said he will not apologise.
"A listener sent me the idea, I merely read it out on the air. I'm Afrikaans myself, but if people are touchy, it's their problem, not mine," he said.
Complaints Commission registrar Shouneez Martin confirmed that the commission had received the complaint.
"We asked the broadcaster (5FM) for an answer and a recording of the programme and then we'll decide what the next step is," she said.

Pass this on to Gareth 31/08/2006 09:05
Maybe this will balance out the equation. A lot of black people have two names - one being an African name and the other an English or Afrikaans name. Most see this "white" name as the Christian name, I like to call it the slave name. I'm lucky though I have two African names. We need to start to learn how to laugh at ourselves and not only at others, otherwise we'll be stuck in the frame and mentality of being different when we're all the same. - Sibby |

Wake Up! 31/08/2006 09:07
Come on, people!
If you don't like what you hear on the radio, change to another station or switch the thing off!
I'm Afrikaans and proud of it, and I have a sense of humour that helps me appreciate Gareth's show.

Get over yourself! 31/08/2006 09:28
I wish Afrikaners will just get over themselves. I am Afrikaans by birth and that's where it stays. Early in my life I realised that I simply do not have as many issues as your regular cross-section of Afrikaners - I DO have a sense of humour - unlike most of you! - Tania |

Ole' Gareth 31/08/2006 09:34
If Mr Cliff at least talked some sense every now and again I would make an attempt to listen to his show more often. But his comments are lame, his sense of humour pathetic and his voice annoying. He can mouth off against anyone or anything and anyone having a problem with what he says are dubbed "oversensitive" or aggressive. Anyone following his career knows how insecure the poor soul really is. I'm not going to apologise... Aaaaw. We are a broken public. - Dexter |

Go for it Gareth 31/08/2006 09:36
I think it's time for this lady to lighten up and learn to laugh at herself. So what if she's got 15 names all from different origins, it doesn't make a difference, unless of course you have no sense of humour, as sibby mentioned, people need to learn to laugh at themselves.
I've heard Gareth take a dig at pretty much all nationalities and I hope he keeps it up, we need more humour in this world.

I hate Gareth 31/08/2006 09:37
I think he is a terrible DJ. He talks too much when all his listeners want is to hear good music.
However in this context, I cannot see the problem. I think the listener is being oversensitive. It was not an insult directed at the whole Afrikaner community. It was a comment about the practices of certain people in that community.
PS: 5FM do us a favour - get rid of this idiot Gareth! - KS |

Ag Shame 31/08/2006 09:44
Ag Shame - Did your little ears burn when that happened - grow up - I'm a "Soutie" and proud of it, but I often get mistaken for a "Rock" (I'm bilingual for those stuck in the lower end of the IQ pool) - laugh a little - maybe life won't be all b###h and moan in the morning. - Proudly Souf Effrican |

Afrikaans-speaking 31/08/2006 09:47
Referring to comments on Gareth's joke. A misconception needs to be corrected, namely that there is such a thing as an Afrikaner. I mean, duh ! The "Afrikaner" in SA consists of people speaking Dutch, English, German, Swedish, French, Italian, Spanish, African languages, etc.
The "Soutie" in SA consists of people speaking English, Celtic, Danish, African languages, etc. Therefore we are all South Africans (having been born here)with different home languages. The era of the clans is gone !!! - Gert |

Gareth said Afrikaners are lame because they give their kids funky names. You should have left it at that, lady, and not gone and proved him right. - Mark |
