Pretoria - "Thank the Lord for gay people," said controversial television and radio personality Rian van Heerden last Saturday night.
Van Heerden was honoured in Pretoria by a gay organisation for his contribution to the gay movement.
Van Heerden got the award from the popular soap actress Shaleen Surtie-Richards, during the Capital City Pink Party (CCPP) event, Lick It - The Bash.
About 700 guests attended the party at Tshwane Events Centre in Pretoria West.
Van Heerden was chosen by the organisers of the event to get the first Pink Ballz award, after talking openly in recent times about his homosexuality.
Dr Coenie Louw chairperson of the CCPP, said Van Heerden had helped to tear down stereotypes that surround the gay lifestyle.
"Rian is not afraid to tackle the big questions, and he does not shy away from being gay. If more celebrities could be like that, it would help to change the dim view people have of homosexuality."
Van Heerden said it was the first time he had received such an award.
"I feel very honoured and very proud of this award."
