Cape Town - Evita Bezuidenhout, the drag character created by satirist Pieter-Dirk Uys, is to formally announce her candidacy for South African president later this month.
According to Diva Events, Marketing and Publicity, Bezuidenhout - the legendary former Ambassador to the independent apartheid homeland of the notional state Bapetikosweti - will launch her bid to take over from President Thabo Mbeki in 2009 when his two-term presidency comes to an end.
She will hold an "international" press conference at the Metropole Hotel, Long Street, Cape Town on Wednesday "to clarify as much as she can at this early stage".
According to Diva's Allison Foat, the "most famous white woman in South Africa" will launch her bid for the presidency at the Spier Summer Festival which is being held from 25 to 28 January.
The bid Evita for President has set the legendary old "boerekat" among the ambitious black economic empowerment pigeons, said Foat.
"Since announcing her plans to make herself available as a compromise choice for president of South Africa in 2009, Evita Bezuidenhout has been overwhelmed with messages of support," said the statement.
Also, questions are being asked about her plans. These questions have included what would her platform be? Which party would she represent?
"How many feet would she have to wash?"
How could a middle-aged white Afrikaner 'gogo' become the democratically elected leader of a young African democracy?
Would her apartheid background not stand in her way? And, last but not least, how many feet would she have to wash to become president?
Tea, coffee and koeksisters - traditional Afrikaner cakelets - will be served at the press conference.
