Nelspruit - Like a herd of stubborn goats, Bok van Blerk supporters had trouble remaining fenced in after the popular singer of the song De La Rey appeared on stage at the Blue Moon.

They kept falling over the barriers at the open-air venue as the crowd surged forward in an effort to get closer to Van Blerk.

Van Blerk performed for a DVD recording in front of a crowd of 2 000, who kept cheering him on and urging him to start ahead of schedule.

"Bokkie! Bokkie! Bokkie!" the crowd screamed. Schoolgirls became hysterical when he opened with his first song at 21:00. Van Blerk had the crowd at his feet with Die bok kan blêr.

When it was time for the highlight of the evening, "general De La Rey" appeared on a hill near the stage. Shots were fired while the lyrics of De La Rey sounded over the field.

Like one man the crowd of 2 000 jumped up, fists on their chests.

After the recording of the DVD, Van Blerk had to return for a repeat of De La Rey.

Van Blerk said he found it hard to believe how popular the song has become.

He believed it was not necessarily the responsibility of South African artists to convey Afrikaans culture to the public.

"But I believe we are in the privileged position to act as a voice for the public. I can accentuate the Afrikaans culture with songs like De La Rey so that young South Africans can develop a new pride in their culture.

"Our era's youth grew up during the transition phase from apartheid to the rainbow nation and in the process a lot of Afrikaner pride was lost."

That doesn't mean that he clings to the apartheid years. "To the contrary, I am simply proudly Afrikaans in the new South Africa."

Van Blerk will perform in London from March 11 to 14. He will also tour the Netherlands, Canada, the United States and New Zealand.

The DVD that was recorded at the weekend will probably be released by the middle of the year.

    - Beeld

      Pathetic
    05/02/2007 09:43
When are these people going to realise that Afrikaans is a dead language much akin to latin. and it should be assigned to the history books only. Die bok can bler? pathetic....sounds like something from Wilie Wallie. - Stuart

      Bok
    05/02/2007 10:42
Wow, Naranda, was that first sentence really necessary? I'm just wondering what would have happened if a journalist compared soccer fans to a few baboons storming and killing each other. Or maybe you're a little jealous of the bloke having more supporters/readers than you?! - Chris

      New Afrikaners
    05/02/2007 10:46
As I have said before, laat die ou mense maar van ou dae droom, but the young generation will re-establish the pride and hope that was once a century ago so strong. Geluk! - John L

      Bok....

It is about time the young people stand up and be proudly Afrikaans in the new South Africa. - Charl

      These people, Stuart...
    05/02/2007 10:58
Are the people that brought civilisation to the southern point of Africa, unlike the English-speaking descendants from Britain whose only claim to fame is that they robbed and stole the cream from all those countries they occupied. The Afrikaans-speaking population have as much right to do and say as the racist PAC has. Catch a wake-up rooinek. - Tuffy

      You're pathetic
    05/02/2007 11:33
I'm an ENGLISH South African (with parents of UK descent) and I can't believe what you've written Stuart. Afrikaans is far from a dead language. I work for one of the biggest companies in the country and I can tell you that I have sat in meetings conducted in Afrikaans. Furthermore, I studied at RAU and therefore have mostly Afrikaans friends and an Afrikaans wife. Do you know that Afrikaans is preferred to English by a large portion of non-white South Africans? Grow up. - You reckon

      Not surprised
    05/02/2007 11:36
Comment has already been made on poor journalism, but I would like to refer to "Pathetic's" comments. Afrikaans is dead? According to whom? You? These people? What exactly are you implying? Sounds like you've got a bigger problem than you'd like to admit. Afrikaans is not dead. In your head, maybe, but not according to the rest of the country. - Hein

      Dead language? My foot.
    05/02/2007 11:46
Stuart, Latin may have been relegated to dusty archives (and legal jargon), but Afrikaans is alive and well. Live with it. (And I'm no Afrikaner, I'm a German-speaking S. African.) If I look at the atrocities that Brits have committed over the centuries, I'd rather be associated with Afrikaans, thank you very much. By the way, the correct spelling is Wielie Walie - although your notion of a "wily wally" is just as quaint, haha!! - Mark

      The stats
    05/02/2007 11:55
From https://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/sf.html Breakdown of home languages: IsiZulu 23.8%, IsiXhosa 17.6%, Afrikaans 13.3%, Sepedi 9.4%, English 8.2% Stuart it don't look like it's going away. - Ranter

Idiot award - Winner = Stuart

If you had to wake up in the real work you would understand that 40% of the current SA population speak and read Afrikaans - rather buy yourself a cop of the HAT and get with the programme! - Objective and Fair! - Denys@webmail.co.za

      Stuart!!!!

You have just proven that you are an idiot. Get a life dude - Ian

      Afrikaans is dead... decomposed allready...
    05/02/2007 13:11
Many people speak it simply becuase they had no choice. At school, few years ago, you would fail the year if you fail afrikaans (subject). It was forced upon the non-white (the same as that "volks lied"). Unfortunately, learning afrikaans is one of most useless things i've done & was a total waiste of time. "Ek kan die verdomde taal praat maar my kinders sal dit nooit leer nie". Let them sing songs with it cause it's the only thing you can use this 'oppresive' language for any way. - Ben

Stop the prejudice and quote some hard numbers!
    05/02/2007 14:53
According to Stats SA (home languages, 2001 survey): Zulu = 23.8%, Xhosa = 17.6%, Afrikaans = 13.3%, Sepedi = 9.4%, Setswana and English = 8.2%. I think that settles the question whether Afrikaans is "dead"... (En Ben, as jy net Engels wil praat, moet jy darem leer om woorde soos "allready", "becuase", "waiste" en "oppresive" korrek te spel... - sies tog.) - Mark

      Idiots against Afrikaans
    05/02/2007 14:54
Message to Ben and Stuart, and to all others that have the same opinions. You guys have absolutely NO culture, probable don't know anything better than to sit at home and drink some english tea. As an Afrikaner(and VERY proud to be) can surely say that Afrikaners and Afrikaans as a language will still go strong for centuries to come. To Bok, Jy kook ou maat. Dankie vir wat jy en ander musikante vir Afrikaans doen. - Gerhard
