Cape Town - South Africa's soap war has claimed its first casualty.
In a shock announcement, etv has announced it will be canning Backstage from mid-year.
The soapie has been struggling for years to hit the big time.
Since January, it's had to compete with 7de Laan on SABC2, Binnelanders on MNet and Isidingo on SABC3, on the peak 18:30 time slot.
Backstage, which began in May 2000, has been hampered by changes in the cast, and production spats between the various production houses and the channel.
Backstage is produced by Bottom Line Productions, with veteran dramatist Deon Opperman at its helm.
"The final episode will be televised at the end of June," said the newly appointed publicity chief at etv, Vasili Vass.
The channel will announce shortly what soapie is to replace Backstage, he said.
