  • Johannesburg - Pupils at an Eastern Cape school are doing a choreographed set of movements to Bok van Blerk's controversial song De la Rey, the SABC reported on Tuesday.

De la Rey is one of a number of songs that have been choreographed as part of the 70th Anniversary celebrations of the Brandwag high school in Uitenhage.

Movements for De la Rey form a rifle, mountain and a farmhouse - all mentioned in the song which depicts an Anglo-Boer War setting.

Three pupils across the racial spectrum told the SABC they liked the song.

"This actually shows to people and especially other schools where it's [De la Rey] forbidden that it is actually just another song. We just show that De la Rey is something to enjoy. We make fun," one student said.

"We are one nation with one heartbeat and I really believe that De la Rey is very exciting for every one of us.

"We like the song very much and it reflects the way that Brandwag is 70 years old and it has to do with the history and it really plays a good part in our lives," said another.

"So I think there's no racism in our school. There's definitely no racism. Everybody feels part of one school. They love each other," said another pupil.
