Johannesburg - Musician Lebo M and theatre producer Pieter Toerien, were tearful as they welcomed the hit musical The Lion King at the State Theatre in Pretoria on Monday.
The two, South African producers of the show, were visibly moved on the first day of rehearsals, where the local cast was named.
"History is being made in South Africa today. After many years of wandering afar like someone in exile, the king's home where he belongs.
"I've waited a long time for this day to arrive and I'm glowing with pride at our local talent, who will excel in the world's best stage production," Lebo M gushed.
The Lion King will premiere in South Africa for the first time since it was first performed ten years ago, at the brand new Teatro at Montecasino, Fourways on May 22.
It will open with 53 local actors and singers, 20 orchestra members and a 70-strong technical team.
It will be the first time in the history of this musical that the cast will consist exclusively of local talent.
