Johannesburg - Egoli fans were left hanging 3 000m in the air on Friday night when their love-to-hate soapie star, Jane, jumped from a plane with a faulty parachute, at the same time that M-Net's open-time ended.
Did Egoli's prize-witch plunge to her death? Was her life snuffed out while she was trying to set a trap for the soapie's hero Krynauw (Hannes van Wyk)?
Nasty Jane (Corine du Toit) knew all about Krynauw's fear of heights, and she planned Walco's team-building exercise accordingly.
Viewers saw her meddling with Krynauw's parachute cords, but during the big jump she realised that her own chute wasn't opening.
The episode's dramatic climax had fans glued nailed to the TV set by the thousand, to the very end.
At the same time, it was the last episode of Egoli in the open-time slot on SABC which is a thing of the past as from Monday.
Without an M-Net encoder or DStv, viewers won't be able to see if Jane survived the big jump.
Gert van Niekerk, who produced the episode for Egoli's open time "swan song", said professional parachutists from the Johannesburg Sky-Diving Club were deployed for the spine chilling sequences, which took three days to shoot.
'She's up in the air'
"We had to use a bit of trick photography to get the sequence right and to create the right tension," he said.
But did Jane die?
Gert just shrugs his shoulders: "I don't know. But, her chute didn't open and she's 3 000m up in the air!"
Since the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) announced that open-time was to come to an end, Egoli fans have been dreading the moment that their soapie would be snatched away from them.
Lani Lombard, M-Net's publicity chief, said schedules had been especially adapted for the 17:00 to 19:00 time slot, the former open-time.
