Pretoria - Natasha Sutherland, wife of South African singer Steve Hofmeyr and former Egoli actress has so far declined all offers to play herself in a musical about his life.

Steve, who's an outspoken activist these days, says his wife is quite adamant about not accepting an offer from dramatist Deon Opperman, who's behind That's how it was-the Steve Hofmeyr story.

"Everyone, even the bloggers, want Natasha in the role, but she's not budging.

"So we'll have to wait and see what's gong to happen with the role," Hofmeyr confided recently at a show in Johannesburg.

Opperman recently announced that besides a few young actors who'll play the young Steve, Hofmeyr himself will star in the big production and sing a few of his biggest hits.

The musical by Opperman's Packed House Productions will focus on Hofmeyr's life while growing up, to his present famed status

Marintha Labuschagne of the production company said on Wednesday they could not disclose who'd be playing the younger versions of Steve, his children or even his manager of many years, Louis van Wyk.

That's apparently because auditions still have to be held for the roles in the next few weeks.

Other roles that have people guessing are the character of the lovable late Dulcie van den Bergh (Tant Stienie in Agter elke Man) arch-rival Deon Maas of Saterdagnag fame and the journalist he tackled at an arts festival.

First musical focused on a star who is still alive

"I'm very excited and honoured by the musical, although I had hoped initially that he (Opperman) would wait until I had died," Hofmeyr said.

Labuschagne said the production was one of only a handful of Afrikaans musicals in the Opera House of Pretoria's State Theatre.

It will also be the first musical focused on a star who is still alive, and will portray himself, in the production.

The production is scheduled to begin at the State Theatre on 4 October 2007.
